EIT InnoEnergy to work with European Commission on newly launched European Solar PV Industry Alliance

The European Commission has launched the European Solar Photovoltaic Industry Alliance, with the aim of scaling up manufacturing technologies of innovative solar photovoltaic products and components. Building on the successful track record of the European Battery Alliance, the Commission will work with EIT InnoEnergy to establish the European Solar Photovoltaic Industry Alliance to foster an innovative solar PV industry value chain in Europe. The alliance aims to support the EU in reaching 30 GW of annual solar energy manufacturing capacity by 2025 across the full PV value chain.

Commissioner Thierry Breton, responsible for the Single Market, said:

To meet Europe’s renewable energy objectives — and avoid replacing a dependency on Russian fossil fuels with new dependencies — we are launching an industrial alliance for solar energy. With the alliance’s support, the EU could reach 30 Gigawatt of annual solar energy manufacturing capacity by 2025 across the full PV value chain. The alliance will foster an innovative and value-creating industry in Europe, which leads to job creation here. Europe’s solar industry already created more than 357,000 jobs. We have the potential to double these figures by the end of the decade.”

Open call for members

The member-based alliance brings together businesses and stakeholders interested in scaling up European manufacturing of competitive, innovative, and sustainable solar PV products as well as diversifying international PV value chain components and supply raw materials. The alliance is open to all public and private entities with relevant activities in the area of solar PV.

Any organisation with relevant activity in the European Economic Area and that meets the eligibility criteria can join the alliance by filling out the membership application form.

Launch event

The alliance will be formally launched at a high-level conference in Brussels on 9 December where founding alliance members and other stakeholders will be on hand to promote the alliance and discuss relevant issues. European Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton will host the conference and will be joined by EIT InnoEnergy CEO Diego Pavia.

Registration for the event both in-person and via live stream is now open.

A more robust alliance website will be launched following the event on 9 December which will also act as a resource for members and the industry at large.
